   This November sees the opening of an exciting exhibition and associated events at the Back Loft. From November 23^rd through to the 28^thNegative Exposure will present the breath-taking and insightful work of two fine art photographers and three art models, who have worked in close collaboration to bring this highly unusual exhibition together.

   The depiction of the human body in art has long been contentious. This exhibition has been put together by five people who have consciously addressed these issues in their work . The diverse ages (23 - 57) and cultural backgrounds (Ireland, U.S., Poland and Italy) have informed the development of the work and issues of gender and sexuality are examined directly in some of the work. Above all this is an exhibition of work involving five people who are passionate about the power and beauty of the human body and its depiction in fine art photography.

   The active participation of the three models is a unique feature of this exhibition. In addition to actively collaborating in the creation of the photographic work, the models have worked creatively with castings of their own bodies and also produced video footage looking at some of the issues around figurative art, modelling and photography.

   As well as the exhibition, the Negative Exposure group are running a fine art photography workshop and a multi-facetted evening which will go into the exhibition in depth and explore the issues it raises.

ALL DAY WORKSHOP INFORMATION

This full day workshop on fine art nude photography is being held in conjunction with the exhibition “Negative Exposure”. Participants will spend half the workshop with each photographer covering preparation, the working relationship between model and photographer, lighting, the shoot and post-production. Participants will have a shoot with a model as part of each session, i.e. two shoots during the day. Each group will be kept small to ensure in-depth dialogue and a reasonable time to shoot.

Karol Liver and Douglas Ross are two innovative photographers with different styles and working in different ways. Karol Liver has an improvisational approach to developing the content of his work, with meticulous attention to technical execution. By contrast, Douglas Ross prepares his themes intensively before the shoot and then improvises technically. 
Juchi, Rachel Lally and Spunky Gore are three models, each with their own exciting and distinctive style. They have participated actively in the development of the work in “Negative Exposure” and will give participants a rare opportunity to dialogue with them about the model’s perspective, as well as a couple of wonderful opportunities during the workshop to work with them.

All artists have worked on a piece in and around this theme and have kindly donated their works to the Anti Racism Network (ARN) for exhibition and fundraising.

This one day event is to take place in the Back Loft Gallery 7-11 St. Augustine Street (of Thomas Street) Dublin 8 on Saturday 5^th of November 2011.

With a room filled with inspired, beautiful and affordable art pieces from many different artists we hope to create awareness of The ARN in a fun fundraising event.

VISIT 2011 is an open invitation to the public to come see how artists work, to explore artistic methodologies and to have a glimpse into the creative processes that culminate in the artworks often shown in galleries, museums, art centers, artist led spaces and various venues. Many exhibitions show the end result of artistic practices,VISIT 2011 invites you to see how visual arts practice takes shape on the ground. Following the national and international focus of Dublin Contemporary, VISIT 2011 provides the opportunity to refocus on the wealth of artistic practices thriving in Dublin city, VISIT is delighted to partner with Dublin Dublin Contemporary and to receive the on-going support of Dublin City Council to present this year’s open studio day.

This year sees VISIT’s third event which comprises of eighteen visual arts studios in Dublin city and will provide access to over two hundred and fifty visual artists. Dublin’s creative city is mapped out through the great variety of studio work-spaces in this specially produced VISIT 2011 publication and on the accompanying website. VISIT operates as an archive in two ways, it provides an extensive inventory of all the participating artists and it also displays architectural spaces used by visual artists as studios, ranging from industrial warehouses, Georgian buildings, converted stables and many other inspirational uses of space. With this large scale open studios event, visitors can see the wide diversity of art forms at work within these spaces from painting, sculpture, video, photography, performance, new media and installation. 

This private and often hidden world of the Artist’s Studio life is opened up to the public for one day, VISIT is a chance to connect with the many unseen layers of cultural activity that go on in our city. Contained in this brochure and on our website you can find a map of the city-wide visual art studios, with information and contact details for this free public event and suggestions on how you can plan your day of studio visits.

The Back Loft will play host, throughout the day, to a group exhibition with contributions from many of La Catedral's resident artists, to include an interactive, performance/installation by Anthony Collins, "The Academy for Less Control". This is the culmination of A. Collins' interactive practice over the past 12 years. In this installation the artist emphasises the fun-chance-spontaneous nature of the piece by making tools or implements which can be understood as playful. For this unique Back Loft Concerto participants will be asked to make a percussive sound on the open strings of a piano, the sound to be recorded and than mixed to make a unified piece on a CD. Come along and take part!!

United Speech is an emerging non profit organisation linking teachers/students/travel-goers here in Ireland with schools that desperately seek language teachers in South India.. The idea sprung from seeing/experiencing organisations that profit hugely from package sort of volunteer holiday trips - the organisation charge a fee etc, the school receive little money from this fee and the volunteers are working for free regardless. So I thought it would be cool to create a medium where people interested in teaching abroad can get direct contact with schools, and not have to worry about extra costs besides their own personal travel expenses.



This event is basically a chance to call out to people who want to take part in something different and worthwhile and to share ideas etc for future events/promotion and maybe join an exciting different sort of collective. We have some great entertainment for the night so good times will be surely had!

Cfit played their first gig at Electric Picnic 2010 as a three-piece and expanded to a five-piece just in time to play Hard Working Class Heroes 2010, where they were received extremely well. Soon after, they released their debut single "Don't Sweat the Small Shit", which received worldwide reviews.
Now expanded to a seven-piece to fully capture their expansive recorded sound, Cfit launched their debut album "Triage" to a sold out Crawdaddy on April 1st, and have since garnered much praise for their efforts.

Vocal duo Tryst brings an intense and compelling energy to a richly varied vocal repertoire, ranging from Léonin to John Cage. Following two successful shows in New York as part of Culture Irelands Imagine Ireland initiative, Tryst return to Dublin to perform at one of the city’s quintessential venues – The Back Loft.

Drawing inspiration from jazz, contemporary, classical, cabaret and folk performance cultures, Michelle O'Rourke and Nora Ryan explore and interpret vocal repertoire. This eclectic approach, combined with the singers’ rare chemistry, throws music from the canon into a new, idiosyncratic, unique and beautiful light. Renowned British tenor John Potter (Hilliard Ensemble, Red Byrd) has described the synergy between O’Rourke and Ryan as “a magical unison”.

Featuring a captivating mix of arranged and improvised music, Tryst performs a seamless show that re-imagines, re-invents and re-defines conceptions of the singer’s role as interpreter. Medieval organa and rondeau are reduced to their beautiful essence, rapid-fire Aperghis Récitations are spliced into luxuriant Poulenc chansons, American art song is placed in the dark atmosphere of Tom Waits, solos by John Cage are lent a new, subtle theatre, and Kurt Weill torch song becomes haunting two-part counterpoint.

O’Rourke and Ryan perform with regular collaborators: composer-drummer Dennis Cassidy, bassist Sean Maynard Smith and English composer-pianist Jonathan Brigg. For this show at the Back Loft, special guest Adrian Hart (Yurodny, I draw slow) will join them on violin. The programme will include music by John Cage, Kurt Weill, Tom Waits, Richard Hundley, Guillaume de Machaut and Jonathan Brigg. This performance will also feature the Irish premiere of new work Mad Sweet Pangs through my Belly & Breast by Irish composer Judith Ring. Michelle O’Rourke commissioned this work for Tryst with funds from the Irish Arts Council: the work was premiered in New York this September.
