Wednesday
Sile an tSleibhe OPERA
Date : 4th September 2012
Time : 7pm till about 8
Venue : The Back Loft, 7/11 St Augustine St Dublin
Admission €5
Síle an tSléibhe is a new chamber opera in Irish with the dramatic poetry of Cathal Ó Searcaigh, the great Donegal writer, and the music of Donegal-born composer Derek Ball. The opera has only just been completed and this partial first performance by soprano Elizabeth Hilliard is an unstaged 'workshop' type event featuring key moments from the opera, (hence the concession price). Throughout, you will be talked through what is happening (in English) so it's not a drawback if you're not fluent in Irish. The story is a simple but powerful one of love, loss and madness, at times stark, at times beautifully tender, and with a surprisingly serene ending. Oh, and there are tin whistles combined with electro-acoustic sound.

The collective's aim is basically to invent a traditional artform
from
the ground up. There are resonances from traditions from around the
world such as flamenco and Javanese gamelan, but the show is a unique
blend of music, poetry, and physical theatre.
For this show we have conceived of the stage itself as a song, but one that doesn't have one progression from beginning to end, but is a free space in which unforeseen directions can be taken.
'often has the flavour of a strange, incomprehensible ritual...'
