Following last years success, The Anti Racism Network will be holding another one day event in the Back Loft. This event is a celebration of Multicultural Dublin and will open with an exhibition of works by artists from all around the globe. Following the exhibition will be an array of performances; music, dance and spoken word.
This is a collabroative initative between The Anti Racism Network, The Back Loft & Artists and Musicians living in Dublin. It promises to be a great night!

Call for Work: Mamuska Dublin

 *MAMUSKA DUBLIN  returns Friday 30th November 2012 @ THE BACK LOFT, 8pm*

 La Cat Salons calls local, national and international artists to participate in the upcoming Mamuska Dublin! This is a unique occasion to present and view evolving works,  raw ideas, unrehearsed visions, trials and errors, short masterpieces,  playful nonsense, first steps... all in the context of an informal  environment where like-minded artists meet, mingle, discuss and receive  feedback from the audience. Be a part of it!

A maximum of ten artists will present their work, with lively musical breaks for discussion.

Submission criteria:

 * open to works in the fields of dance, live performance, live installation, sound and video art
 * all works must be under 10 minutes long
 * all works must have very simple technical set up and requirements
 * send title, duration and brief description of work submitted
 * send short CV of people involved
 * inclusion of supporting material is recommended

CATHAIR

INSTALLATION

Opening reception, Tuesday 16th october, 6.30 pm

‘CATHAIR’ is more than a word, the poet Ceaití Ní Bheildiúin finds as she explores the connection between city and ancient sites in Ireland.  Using a litany of place names, chanted by the singer Rónán Ó Snodaigh, and the controlled performance of Zoe Uí Fhaoláin on screen, the poet’s multimedia installation merges visual images with verse to question our sense of place, of time and of belonging.

The exhibition, commissioned by IMRAM Irish Language Literature Festival 2012, consists of multiple projections which interact with Irish language text and poems.  Outdoor projections for this installation are to be seen at night during the festival near City Hall, on Dame St., and on the screen at Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, during the exhibition.  A further part of the installation will be at Exchange, on Exchange St., Temple Bar.

Artist's statement:

“This project has brought me to out of the way rural places, sometimes clambering among rubble  of stones and other times to find curved elegance and craftsmanship of an ancient time. The same work has brought me to explore the city and to relate to it in a new way.  It has reconnected me to it to city life because I left Dublin nine years ago choosing a rural place to live.  This city visit has stirred something in me – a new curiosity in the function of ‘city’, the practicality of ‘city’, the exuberance and diversity of it along with the dangers inherent in it.

“Working with different people brings new tension into the work so I bring people in on every aspect of the work that limited budgets permit.. The installation calls for the varying elements of film-making and therefore need a team to put it together.  I love working with Zoe Uí Fhaoláin. She is a performance artist in her own right who has performed solo pieces as well as having worked with other artists. This is not our first time to work together.  She is tunes in instantly and takes direction easily. Whatever it is she brings to the piece, it is always wonderful. I learn from each person I work with. The text for the project only began to come to life when Jindrech Stanek, a young graphic designer, came on board.  He worked his magic on it.

“As with all new work, this installation has brought me to new places in my head.  The scope of the exhibition allows me to communicate only so much of my experience with the subject and my response to it. Now the audience comes in and it’s out of my hands.”

Anthony Hackett 'Beyond Borders' Exhibition

Irish artist Anthony Hackett has been studying and working in the field of fine art for over a decade. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Dublin Institute of Technology.  Anthony Hackett has exhibited in solo shows and group exhibitions around Ireland. He currently holds a position teaching Fine Art at Ballyfermot College of Further Education.  

Anthony’s paintings are a beautiful exploration into the issues of current day Ireland and also on global issues. He has been active and involved in politics for many years and is an advocate for human rights. His canvases display themes such as religion, immigration, family and social injustices’. The artist uses the canvas and a strong sense of colour to invoke a deep sense of thought and understanding on these issues. Anthony’s paintings have always involved vivid colour and a strong sense of paint with bold brush strokes and a strong subject matter. Though his works have, over the years, looked at issues of current day Ireland; the works for this exhibition are powerful and capture a sense of where the world is now and how power and greed effect people who are of a more disadvantaged placement in society. This exhibition at the back Loft is an opportunity to see beautiful works on display in a large space allowing time for the viewer to explore these themes and experience bold colour, strong images and vibrancy coming from the canvases. 

This exhibition will be opened by The Anti Racism Network representative, Luke Bukha who is a Zimbabwean living in Ireland for over seven years and who is also actively involved in human rights issues.

Artist’s statement:

The paintings for “Beyond Borders” were executed between 2008 and 2012 with the majority been finished in 2012.

Most of the finished paintings arrived on the canvas through my use of paint; what I mean by this is that paint is brushed, thrown or rubbed into the canvass in an arbitrary way. No image is present in my mind or set out before me, except in the case of the three paintings “Lilies”  “Cores” and “Sea Shells”, which were carried out by observing the subject.

The subject matter and images arrive from my subconscious through my pushing, playing, removing and scratching of the paint on the canvas. The images that arrive can be landscapes, situations or events that I have experienced, read or witnessed and that have made an impact on me. They arrive from my subconscious and when I am happy with the image it is finished.

Culture Night at La Catedral Studios

 
















Open Studios 21^st September , From 5-11pm

On Culture Night La Catedral Studios will be open for one day only to visitors. 24 artists working in combined-media will throw their doors open to show their work and studios where their daily art practice unfolds. On the day we shall have a showcase of the artists’ works on the walls of the Studios. We welcome visitors to join us in celebrating a day of community, interaction and sharing. We will also be opening the doors of our new cafe/salon where visitors can enjoy a warm and informal atmosphere which includes music, snacks, teas and wonderful discussion.

The Circus of Perseverance

Which circus performer are you? A clown? A lion tamer? A bearded lady? The Circus of Perseverance is a rambunctious production that will immortalise one of the most testing times in Dublin’s history. Out of the ashes of a burnt and charred city, rise the heroic adventures of characters on the fringes of an absurd society. With the ringmaster as narrator, and our capital as the backdrop, seven interwoven stories are blasted into life in a disco of scenes. Philip Doherty gives us a high-spirited, comedic tribute to Dublin City, and the circus our lives have become.
