"What do you want out of life" is a solo exhibit by Costanzo Idini and is part of a fund raising event featuring also performances and a tango milonga closing with a raffle.

From his travels to Buenos Aires in 2002 Costanzo Idini decided that he had to do more for the poverty stricken children and with this in mind he began the long process of documenting their lives. The objective of this fundraising event is to collect funds to publish a photographic documentary book, with the aim of funding the education of children in order to provide a way out of poverty for themselves and subsequently for their families.

The event will also feature an itinerant VJ piece which will be hosted in various peer venues in Dublin with the aim of networking and raise awareness on human rights and children’s condition in South America through visual art.

FUNDRAISING MILONGA, SATURDAY 16TH OCTOBER, 7.30-11.30PM

The Back Loft will be yet again the dance lounge of an unforgettable tango Milonga, Buenos Aires Style, in conjunction with Compadrito Tango.
Four hours of non stop tango dance and more in the atmospheric setting of the Back Loft surrounded by the evocative photographs shot by Costanzo Idini in a recent trip from Patagonia to Brazil. Entrance fee is 5 Euro only. Donations are welcome and raffle tickets will be on sale throughout thew.e which will entitle the audience to participate to the final raffle prize draw on Sunday at 7pm and also to a complimentary glass of wine!

MAMUSKA DUBLIN Sunday 28th November 2010 @ THE BACK LOFT, 8pm

La Catedral Studios calls local, national and international artists to participate in the upcoming Mamuska Dublin. This is a unique occasion to present and view evolving works, raw ideas, unrehearsed visions, trials and errors, short masterpieces, playful nonsense, first steps... all in the context of an informal environment where like minded people meet and receive feedback from the audience. Be a part of it!
A maximum of ten artists will present their work while a unique sound environment will permeate through out the evening.

To submit your work, fill out the attached form and return to this address.

Submission criteria:

* open to works in the fields of dance, live performance, live installation, sound and video art
* all works must be under 10 minutes long
* all works must have very simple technical set up and requirements
* send title, duration and brief description of work submitted
* send short CV of people involved
* inclusion of supporting material is recommended

A two person exhibition of paintings, prints and installation by Leila Pedersen and Daniel Lipstein. These two artists create a myriad of works gleaned from experience both real, embellished and symbolic. Using different techniques such as drawing, painting and print-making they try to illicit imaginative and emotive response by weaving narrative, dream and theater to provoke a powerful portrait of the human condition.

This show is a celebration of the spoken tale, drawing from the obscure, visionary, intangible; symbolism that is inherent in the folklore of all cultures and that which is expressed in the dreams and desires of the human psyche.

The opening night of this show will incorporate a performance by
professional storyteller Coilín “The Oh-Aissieux” in conjunction and
sympathy with the visual art works featured in the exhibition.

The Sun, the Moon and the Apple
Inspired by a series of poems by Ted Hughes entitled ‘The Epilogue Poems‘ this project conveys free structure of poetry generating a dreamy and sensual atmosphere. The idea is to combine visual arts and video installation with a theatrical performance based on poetry and not on a dramatic text/play. The production plays with both textual and visual qualities of theatre a...nd explores elements of Greek theatre and of physical and dance theatre.

The main theme of the production is the male – female dichotomy of the universe and the never-ending quest for balance and harmony. The inspiration is in mythologies and poetry, and the rendering is impressionistic, oniric and poetic. The project aims to be a poetic extravaganza rather than a traditional play, in which lyricism is laced with suggestive stage images and where missives from the edge of extreme experience are laced with a wry humour.

Up there with Ireland’s best and most exciting chamber choirs, the brilliant New Dublin Voices has chosen Culture Night at the Back Loft to launch its eagerly anticipated debut CD, “Something Beginning With B”. The event takes place early on Culture Night – 6pm til 8pm in the Back Loft. Come along for the buzz and a glass of wine – NDV will be there to sing a track or two from “Something Beginning With B”. The rule for New Dublin Voices’ debut CD was that every track had to have a “B” in it: this means the Beatles are rubbing shoulders with Brahms and Benjamin Britten is neighbours with a barbershop quartet! “Something Beginning With B” has a wide, wide mix of sounds and styles, something for everyone, and is a great sample of the world of New Dublin Voices to have on disc at home or in the car.

52 Weeks - a new visual arts initiative

52 Weeks is a new visual arts initiative devised in conjunction with The Back Loft. This is the first exhibition from 52 Weeks featuring work from Theresa Commins; Will Eames; Aidan Kelly Murphy; Laughlin McKee & James Moloney.

The aim of 52 Weeks is to reconnect with visual art practitioners one year after graduating college as a means to examine their progress and to provide them with the professional opportunity to showcase their work. Furthermore, this initiative focuses on providing a platform for selected participants to acquire the necessary tools to devise and curate their own artist lead projects.
